Here we sit at the end of March without our second U.S. senator.
It's been nearly five months after many of us cast our vote for either Franken or Coleman (or other). Watching the recount and the legal battle that ensued reminded me of how valuable each of our votes was during this last election cycle. Sometimes it is easy to think our one vote doesn’t matter but once in awhile, like in this U.S. Senate race, we are proven wrong. As a long-time voter and self-proclaimed political junkie, I love to see the power of the voters show so blatantly.
And while the ballots from last November’s election are barely put away, it is time to look forward to the next tests of political will—dozens of public officials already lining up to position themselves for the 2010 elections. For us this means we need to wear several hats at the same time: working with the current “batch” of politicians elected at the state and federal level; and planning ahead for the resources we will need for the next election cycle. The political world is, unfortunately, a very dynamic one because of the frequency of elections/re-elections. For House members, they are constantly in campaign mode because their election cycle starts even before their second legislative session starts.
To prepare us for the 2010 election cycle, we will be gearing up our political action fundraising cycle as well. Watch for our materials and if you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact me BEFORE you toss the materials into your circular files!
I have a “stash” of political quotes I often use for presentations, so here is one by former Senator Sam J. Ervin: “If men and women of capacity refuse to take part in politics and government, they condemn themselves, as well as the people, to the punishment of living under bad government.”
Let me know what you think.
