There is so much to be “Debbie Downer” about these days with budget-cutting proposals overshadowing any of the positive stories.
If I stay focused on the legislative session, the monumental task of balancing the state budget, and the proposed health/human services reductions, it is easy to get a sense of helplessness.
If, however, I turn my focus to the sparks of grassroots advocacy that members have displayed or to the flames of the Long-Term Care rally on April 28th, then I become more of a “believer”…a believer in the resiliency and dedication of our profession and of the good, solid people that are the core of care and services delivered to older Minnesotans.
Members have stepped up to the grass-roots advocacy “plate” by volunteering to be YouTube "stars” (

These conversations may at times appear to fall on deaf ears, but that isn’t true—in the halls of the Capitol and the back rooms where legislators gather, your conversations echo.
There may be more visible public messages shared by the Education stakeholders, as one example, but I don’t think there are as many memorable, heartfelt messages as the ones we continue to share.
The energy experienced at the April 28th rally has been building up from each grassroots advocacy connection. Those in attendance at the rally understand the sense of belonging, the sense of unity the rally brought forth. For those who attended, as well as those who were unable to attend, take a look at the photos (click here) to see the enthusiasm – and keep the flames burning!
