Silver Quality Award Program Workshop

Join us for this two-day workshop focused on the Silver Quality Award.  You’ve earned Bronze…congratulations!  Now it’s time to take your next steps in your performance excellence journey and head to the next level – Silver.  Cathy Bergland, of CB Leadership Group, is our facilitator.  Cathy has 40 years of experience with older adult services in Minnesota as well as 13 years of experience with the Quality Award Program.  She currently serves as an Examiner, Trainer, Judge, and Consultant to the program, so she is well-positioned to help you take this next step in quality improvement and performance excellence.

The AHCA/NCAL National Quality Awards Program is a progressive program that is based on the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence. Participants move from the Bronze level, to Silver, and then ultimately to Gold. Attendees have been recognized at the Bronze and are now positioned to write a Silver application.

Participants will examine the requirements and draft some initial ideas for the AHCA/NCAL Silver National Quality Award.  Participants will leave the workshop with a better understanding of what is required for the Silver Quality Award process.

Topics over the two days cover the following:
  • Introductions, Understanding the Baldrige framework 
  • The Quality Award Process, including technical requirements 
  • Organizational Profile (OP) 
  • Results Concepts of Importance, Trends, Levels, and Comparisons 
  • Category 7 – details, sample results, and tips; scoring 
  • Process Concepts of Approach, Deployment, Learning, and Integration 
  • Understanding the details of the Process Categories (1-6), tips and scoring 
  • Logistics, Technical Issues, and Ideas for Project Management

Objectives
  • Review the Silver Criteria and gain clarity on points of confusion, as well as learn ideas of how to respond to the questions.
  • Learn the skills of how to describe approaches and processes in response to the criteria questions, as well as a basic understanding of the scoring of process items.
  • Understand how to effectively present results to manage the organization and the basics of scoring for results.

Owner and Lead Consultant, CB Leadership Group
Cathy is the owner and lead consultant for the CB Leadership Group. The CB Leadership Group focuses in the areas of Leadership Development, Intercultural Competence, and Performance Excellence. She brings nearly 40 years of leadership experience having served in and with various organizations.

Cathy served at Presbyterian Homes & Services (PHS) from 1986 - 2026, most recently as the Leadership Institute Dean. Presbyterian Homes & Services provides care and services to older adults in more than fifty campuses in Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin and currently employs nearly 8,000 staff. Her previous roles include Executive Director of Leadership Development and Organizational Effectiveness, Director of Care Center Operations, Director of Quality Management, and the Executive Director of Operations.

Cathy has more than 15 years of experience with the Performance Excellence Criteria (Baldrige Criteria). She serves as a Judge, Trainer, Examiner, and chair of the Board for the AHCA/NCAL Quality Award program and is certified through the Performance Excellence Network (PEN) to perform organizational assessments and evaluate organizational performance; she also serves as a Judge for PEN. Over the last five years, Cathy has facilitated a number of state, regional, and national workshops related to Performance Excellence framework and criteria – focused specifically on the application of those criteria to skilled nursing facilities and assisted living communities. In addition, she has worked directly with multi-facility organization and specific facilities as they implement the criteria and document them for an application.

Cathy also served as the Chief Learning Officer from 2012 - 2020 and as a Training and Development Consultant from 2020 - 2022 for ImpactLives. Before joining ImpactLives as a staff member, she was Chair of the Board of Directors for four years. At ImpactLives, Cathy designed and delivered transformational leadership development experiences for corporate, faith-based and education-based clients with a focus on strengths-based leadership, intercultural competence (Diversity-Equity-Inclusion), and performance excellence. She also served in operational, administrative, and customer relationship management roles.

Cathy received her undergraduate degree in Music Therapy from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, her MBA from the University of St. Thomas, and is also a licensed Nursing Home Administrator. She has filled adjunct faculty positions with the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (Health Care Administration) and Bethel University (MBA Program). She is a Qualified Administrator (QA) for the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI). She also serves on several Boards, providing governance and oversight to those organizations.
