Environmental services: A vital role in infection prevention

Environmental services: A vital role in infection prevention
With the onset of COVID-19, it has become abundantly clear how we must take the facility environment very seriously. All skilled nursing facility/nursing facility (SNF/NF) staff have obligations for the facility environment; however, one department is charged with that responsibility more than others: environmental services.

Care Providers of Minnesota is presenting an online workshop on Wednesday, June 24, 2020, that will provide a look at the environmental services department and the huge role it plays in infection prevention. Does your environmental services staff know what order to put on personal protective equipment or take it off? How do your environmental services staff clean equipment that is used in a precaution room?

Do you know how knowledgeable your environmental services staff are when it comes to cleaning a precaution room or in doing terminal cleaning when the precautions are over? How much time are you spending on education regarding infection control? Is one training enough? This online workshop will answer these questions and more, as well as give you tools to make infection control more streamlined. Join this workshop to identify areas that need improvement and affirm that what you are doing are best practices.
Learning objectives
  • Define the purpose of the infection prevention and control program
  • Identify three policies and procedures that are needed for environmental services
  • Outline when soap & water should be used instead of an alcohol-based gel or wipes
  • List three principles of cleaning
