AL Workshop: Resident & Family Councils

AL Workshop: Resident & Family Councils
August 1, 2021, brings many changes to assisted living with a new assisted living license mandate. Housing with services and arranged home care providers in assisted living communities have many actions to take between now and August 1, 2021, to get ready for compliance. Two of the action steps concern residents and family councils.

The Bill of Rights gives residents the right to organize and participate in resident and family councils and the statutes detail the providers’ responsibilities providing meeting space, designating a staff person to be responsible for providing assistance and responding to written requests, and respond promptly to the grievances and recommendations of the councils.

This online workshop will provide strategies and insight in successful resident/family councils that go beyond merely meeting the regulatory obligation and how to use the councils to increase engagement and improve the quality of life, care, and safety for residents. The presenters were part of a grant-funded pilot project in 2019-2020 with consultants from the Minnesota Alliance for Patient Safety (MAPS) to set up community advisory councils that focused on true engagement.

Learning objectives
  • Identify new and possible ways to bring the resident voice into organizational problem-solving and decision-making
  • Understand other effective and meaningful opportunities to have two-way conversations with residents/families
  • Learn how a community advisory board approach can comply with the requirements and also add value to resident and family councils
